New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given a one-time relief to all charitable trusts and institutions that missed the deadline to renew their 80G registration to retain the tax-exempt status that allows donors to claim deductions on contributions.

In a circular issued Friday, the tax department said it had condoned delay in filing renewal applications for organisations whose 80G approval was due to expire on March 31. The relief covers applications filed electronically between October 1, 2025 and March 31 this year.

The move is expected to benefit trusts and non-profit organisations that risked losing their 80G approval after failing to meet the September 30, 2025 deadline. Without a valid approval, donations to such organisations would not qualify for tax deduction, potentially affecting their ability to raise funds.

The 80G registration allows charitable organisations and non-governmental organisations to attract donations. The Income Tax Department certification enables donors to claim a 50% deduction on their contributions.
