Chabahar Port a major symbol of India-Iran cooperation: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday emphasised that the Chabahar Port was a major symbol of India-Iran cooperation and expressed hope that Delhi would continue its investments in the strategic project despite challenges posed by US sanctions.

Addressing a media briefing after the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting on Friday, Araghchi also called on India to play a greater diplomatic role in the Middle East region to ensure stability. Iran would always appreciate "any positive constructive role" played by India in the region.

Chabahar port is one of the symbols of cooperation between Iran and India. We are so glad that Indians played an important role in the development of that port," Araghchi said.

It is understood that future of Chabahar Port and role of Iran was discussed when Araghchi met EAM S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval. "I hope that Indians would continue their work in Chabahar port so it would be fully developed at the service of the interests of India and other countries around," the Iranian Foreign Minister said.

India has been engaged with Iran to conclude an arrangement for securing its interests in the strategically located Chabahar Port with USA not extending sanctions waiver on the port beyond April 26.

The government is in talks with Tehran to enter into an arrangement with a local ports authority to manage the Chabahar Port with a guarantee that this right will be transferred back to India when sanctions are lifted, ET was the first one to report.
