To rehabilitate 36,140 Reang tribals, Centre and Tripura government has rolled out Rs 1,200 crore scheme.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said that around 13 locations are selected to rehabilitate Reang people.

These people are locally called Bru. Deb said, “Prime minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have taken the bold steps to resolve the 24-years old ethnic crisis of the Reang tribals.”

The Prime Minister already announced a Rs 600 crore package for the resettlement.

An agreement was signed in New Delhi in 2020 to ensure that all the Brus who refused to return to Mizoram and chose to remain in Tripura would be allowed to do so and would be provided with rehabilitation packages as those who returned to Mizoram during the government-sponsored repatriation processes.

The agreement was inked between the centre, state governments of Mizoram, Tripura, royal scion of Tripura Pradyut Kishore Debbarma and 5 major organisations of the Bru community in the Tripura relief camps.

All the Bru families presently residing in the relief camps in Tripura after November 30, 2019 and willing to settle in Tripura would be resettled in Tripura.

These willing families would be entitled for a rehabilitation package as agreed to those who returned to Mizoram which was earlier stipulated in the agreement reached in Delhi on July 3, 2018.

The rehabilitation package agreed in the meeting held on July three 2018 in Delhi between the centre, state governments of Mizoram and Tripura and representatives of Brus in the six relief camps failed to bring back the majority of the Brus from the Tripura relief camps to Mizoram.

Thousands of Bru refugees from Mizoram stayed in Tripura after ethnic clashes of 1997.
