Centre steps in as Northeast battles floods

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured assistance to the flood-hit states of Assam, Sikkim and Manipur.

Modi on Tuesday discussed the situation with the chief ministers of Assam and Sikkim and the governor of Manipur.

Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sikkim's chief minister Prem Singh Tamang took to social media platform X to thank Modi for offering central government help.


"A short while ago, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on how continuous rainfall in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives," Sarma said on X. "The Hon'ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts..."

Sikkim's Tamang, wrote, "Our state administration remains fully committed to managing the situation and providing all necessary assistance to those affected. Thank you once again for your kind concern, Sir." Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla discussed the situation in the state with Modi. An official statement said flooding and landslides have affected around 56,000 people and damaged 10,477 houses.

An official said that over 100 tourists remain stranded in Lachen.

A team of 23 NDRF personnel were rushed to Chhaten in North Sikkim for rescue and search operations for six soldiers missing after a landslide hit an army camp, officials said.
