Established under the Code on Social Security, which came into force in November 2025, the board will advise the Centre on the design, implementation and monitoring of social welfare schemes, the ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The board will be chaired by the labour and employment minister and comprise representatives of the central and state governments, aggregator companies, employers, civil society organisations, workers' unions, and gig & platform worker associations.
The board will meet at least three times a year to deliberate on matters and policies concerning these workers. According to the statement, the board will frame suitable schemes for different sections of unorganised workers and gig & platform workers. It will also advise the central government on matters arising from the administration of the Social Security Code.
In addition, the board will monitor social welfare schemes for these workers administered by the central government and review record-keeping functions at the state level. It will also review expenditure from the funds and accounts set up for the purpose. The Social Security Code consolidates nine existing social security laws into a single framework, providing for social protection for organised, unorganised, gig and platform workers.
