In the previous five years, the Centre has approved the renaming of seven cities and towns, including Allahabad to Prayagraj, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai further stated that the West Bengal administration has submitted a proposal to rename the state 'Bangla' in all three languages - Bengali, English, and Hindi.

The minister also stated that approval was provided to change the names of Birshingpur Pali, Hoshangabad Nagar, and Babai city in Madhya Pradesh to Maa Birasini Dham (2018), Narmadapuram (2021), and Makhan Nagar (2021), respectively.


The minister noted that the name of Punjab's Shri Hargobindpur city will be changed to Shri Hargobindpur Sahib in March 2022.

He stated that the name of Nagar Untari in Jharkhand was changed to Shri Banshidhar Nagar in August of 2018.

While the NOC to change the name of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Prayagraj was issued on December 15, 2018, the NOC to change the name of Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, to Rajamahendravaram was issued on August 3, 2017.
