Priority is to evacuate our personnel, Centre says at Afghan briefing for political leaders
Earlier today, India's political leaders were briefed about the situation in Afghanistan. Minister for External Affairs, S Jaishankar, led the briefing, explaining the situation in the country after the Taliban takeover last week.

Jaishankar has reportedly told the leaders that evacuating Indian personnel from Afghanistan is the country's top priority.

Rajya Sabha's Leader of the House, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, as well as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi were present. The briefing took place in the Parliament House annexe.

The Centre has described the situation in the war-torn country as 'critical', adding that the Taliban broke promises made in the Doha pact.

An agreement between the Taliban and America - signed in February 2020 - the Doha pact expected the militia to uphold religious freedom and democracy.

Also present at the meeting were NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, DMK's T R Baalu, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and Apna Dal's Anupriya Patel.
