CCI chairperson calls for joint BRICS efforts to ensure better oversight of digital markets

Competition Commission of India (CCI) chairperson Ravneet Kaur on Sunday underscored the need for sustained cooperation among competition authorities of the BRICS grouping for effective law enforcement, highlighting the increasingly cross-border nature of digital markets and emerging technologies.

Delivering her inaugural address at the BRICS Heads of Competition Authorities 2026 meeting in Udaipur in Rajasthan, Kaur emphasized on the shared responsibility to “preserve and promote competitive markets that foster efficiency, consumer welfare, innovation, and opportunities for businesses to compete on merit”.

Under India's BRICS Chairship in 2026, the meeting was organised by the CCI. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are the original members of the BRICS, which has been expanded to have 11 members now.


Heads of BRICS competition authorities also adopted a joint statement on “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets”, the antitrust regulator said in a statement.

The regulatory chiefs reaffirm pledge for cooperation, dialogue, and knowledge-sharing to promote effective competition enforcement and address challenges in increasingly interconnected markets, it added.

In her speech, Kaur said continued collaboration among BRICS competition authorities would ensure fair and competitive renewable energy markets while advancing the shared objectives of sustainable growth and energy security.

She also stressed that competition law interventions “must remain principled, evidence-based, and firmly anchored in the core objectives of competition law”.

At the meeting, the BRICS antitrust authorities exchanged views on recent developments in competition law and policy in their respective jurisdictions, including enforcement initiatives and emerging challenges, as per the statement.

The CCI, as part of India's BRICS Chairship, steered a collaborative study titled "Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS", to develop a better understanding of the evolving competition dynamics in renewable energy markets and identify areas for future cooperation.
