CBI raids RG Kar Medical College in financial irregularities case

A seven-member team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday started raids at the residence of former Principal Sandip Ghosh. Simultaneous marathon raids by CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch is underway in 14 other locations across Kolkata, including former MSVP Sanjay Vashisth and Forensic Department professor Debasish Shom's residences, in connection with a High Court monitored probe on financial irregularities in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital during tenure of Sandip Ghosh, following petition by former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Akhtar Ali. The case was handed over to the CBI from SIT yesterday by Calcutta High Court.

The CBI team had reached the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Sandip Ghosh in the morning but the door was not opened reportedly after one hours. The raids have been conducted since 8am and have already crossed six hours. Ghosh was under CBI scanner and was interrogated for last 9 days and he underwent polygraph test as well in connection with the rape & murder of the Post-graduate Medical Trainee at RG Kar Medical.



A team of CBI officials also conducted simultaneous raids at other places in Kolkata and adjoining areas, including RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises, in connection with a corruption probe. Another CBI team began to raid the house of former medical superintendent cum vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth in Entally. Apart from this, a CBI went to the house of one Biplab Singh, who works as a medical supplier at the hospital, in Howrah.

The Forensic Department's professor Debasish Shom's residence in Kestopur is also being raided from this morning.
Several CBI teams reached RG Kar Medical College, Former Principal Sandip Ghosh, former ex-Medical Superintendent cum Vice-President (MSVP) Sanjay Vasisth's and Forensic Department's professor Debasish Shom's residences today.


The "petitioner being the former Deputy Superintendent (Non- Medical) at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata submits that in an effort to expose the persistent irregularities in the ethical practices and operations of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital from the year 2020 to 2023, the petitioner lodged a complaint to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Anticorruption Branch, West Bengal on 13th July, 2023," the order said.

"The petitioner tendered documentary evidence to corroborate the claims of massive corruption, improper utilization of Government funds, selling of used hazardous bio-medical waste and transfer of officers for monetary benefit. Owing to which the petitioner requested the concerned police authority to conduct a comprehensive investigation and enquiry into the purported irregularities, emphasizing the serious ramification of such illegal activities upon public health and safety as well as misappropriation of public funds," the High Court noted in its order while ordering CBI probe on the RG Kar financial irregularities.
