The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the mysterious death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) president Mahant Narendra Giri. The agency registered a case on Friday and dispatched a team of officers from Delhi to Prayagraj to investigate the case. The team includes forensic experts, said people with knowledge of the matter.

The first information report (FIR) registered by the agency mentions Anand Giri, a disciple of the deceased seer.

Earlier this week, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh had recommended a CBI probe into the death of the seer following which the Centre handed over the case to the agency. Giri, president of the largest organisation of seers in India, was found dead on September 20 under mysterious circumstances at Baghambari Math in Prayagraj. An alleged suicide note was recovered from the site in which the name of seer's disciples - Anand Giri and two others - were mentioned. The UP Police had registered a case of abetment to suicide earlier this week.
