Faced with a shortage of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers for central deputation, the union home ministry last week amended the policy for central deputation. According to MHA, officers with a minimum of five years' service will be eligible for induction in R&AW, IB, NIA and the CBI. Earlier, officers with a minimum of five years service were eligible for induction in R&AW, IB and NIA, but could not join CBI. This will help the central agencies access a larger pool for central deputation.

Officials said there are a large number of vacancies in the CBI as the anti-corruption agency in handling a plethora of cases in states and Centre. An SP-level officer is responsible for supervising and handling investigation of the cases. The new tenure policy also proposes empanelment of senior IPS officers.

Officers empanelled in the Centre will be eligible for appointment to posts in the central government. However, non-empanelled officers can be considered for posting in public sector undertaking except for security-related posts like advisor (security), director (security).
