The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Praveen Sood arrived in Guwahati on Monday. Sood is likely to review Manipur violence cases. Sources said that the CBI chief is likely to review developments made by the Special Investigation Teams (SITs) in the investigation of six cases of violence in the northeastern state.

There are over 17 cases which CBI is investigating in the Manipur violence which broke out on May 3.

On December 9, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed chargesheet against nine accused before the special judge of CBI Court at Guwahati in an ongoing investigation of a case.


A case was registered on a request from Manipur Government and further Notification of Government of India. CBI took over the investigation of the said case/ Crime No. 32(7)/2023 dated 15.07.2023, earlier registered at Lamlai Police Station, Imphal East.

It was alleged that at about 12:10 PM on 15.07.2023, one female was forcibly detained at Sawombung Gate by a mob numbering about 100 persons including armed miscreants and was forcibly abducted towards Keibi village in a car. Subsequently, the dead body of the female was recovered on the same day.

CBI stated that further investigation is continuing including the identification of other accused involved in the case. The ethnic conflict between Meitei and Kuki communities that started on May 3 has so far claimed 182 lives and displaced more than 50,000.
