CBI arrests ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh for 'financial irregularities'

"Ghosh has been arrested in connection with financial irregularities. We want justice for the rape and murder case victim. This is a partial victory," a student protester and doctor Aniket Mahato told ET after Ghosh's arrest.
Meanwhile, a new bill, named Aparajita Women & Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, will be tabled in the West Bengal assembly on Tuesday. The Bill includes the provision of death penalty to the person committing rape and inflicting injury which causes death or causes the victim to be in a vegetative state.
"The Bill will be taken up for discussion tomorrow. There will be a discussion for two hours," Speaker Biman Banerjee said at the beginning of the two-day special assembly session.
According to legal experts, this is not a new bill but just an amended version of an already existing legal provision. "The Bill seeks to introduce robust provisions for investigation and adjudication aimed at punishing acts of rape of women and sexual offences against children. To expedite investigations and ensure swift justice for victims, this Bill establishes a dedicated special court and investigation team. These specialised units will be equipped with the necessary resources and expertise to handle cases of rape of women and sexual offences against children efficiently, effectively and timely...," the Bill seen by ET read.
