The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recovered ₹92,400 crore in outstanding tax in this financial year (2024-25) till March 15, said people familiar with the matter.

This included ₹67,711 crore in corporate tax, ₹23,536 crore in personal income tax and ₹1,100 crore on account of non-payment of tax deducted at source. The recovery was made in lieu of the demand notices sent by the income-tax department.

In 2023-24, tax officials had recovered ₹75,000 crore in outstanding tax.

With more taxpayers expected to file revised returns till March 31, the total outstanding tax recovered this fiscal is likely to touch ₹1 lakh crore, an official told ET.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recovered ₹92,400 crore in outstanding tax in this financial year (2024-25) till March 15, said people familiar with the matter.

At the beginning of the financial year, the CBDT had given specific instructions on recovery of outstanding demand including specific zone-wise recovery targets, according to the official.

"We had formulated a detailed action plan with targets... Information from various sources was made available with the tax department to help in recovery more efficiently," the official said.

Field officials were asked to work on cases which were not under the "difficult to recover" category and create a special team consisting of principal commissioner of income tax to provide analytics on cases falling under "top 5,000" identified by the CBDT.

From next year, the CBDT will engage other investigation agencies to track missing taxpayers, said officials.
