Cauvery dispute: Supreme Court asks Tamil Nadu govt to approach water authority for proportionate share

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Tamil Nadu government to approach the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) with its grievance that Karnataka was not releasing the state's proportionate share of Cauvery water.

The development came during the resumed hearing of a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking directions to Karnataka for the immediate release of its due share of water.

Responding to the submission by Tamil Nadu's counsel that the state was not receiving its proportionate share of water, a division bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said it had previously observed that Tamil Nadu appeared to have received more water than its allocated share from Karnataka.

The bench on Monday pointed out that Tamil Nadu had already received water in accordance with the CWMA's directions.

However, Tamil Nadu's counsel contended that the CWMA had not directed the release of the proportionate quantity of water that the state was required to receive.

The court then asked Tamil Nadu to approach the CWMA on the issue. The matter will come up for resumed hearing on August 31.
