Captain Smit Machchhar's childhood friend recalls "hero" pilot's calm and composed nature

Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions aboard a Flydubai aircraft have turned him into a symbol of resolve and duty as his story spreads farther and wider.

The Indian pilot, who was hailed for preventing a co-pilot from attempting to crash a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, continued to draw praise from neighbours, friends, educators and political leaders as updates on his condition emerged, news agency PTI reported on October 1.

Childhood friend Prateek Gandhi, who grew up with Machchhar in a Mumbai housing society, recalled that the pilot had always been calm and composed. Gandhi said Machchhar stood out even as a child for his steady temperament and mature outlook.

Residents of the housing society said news of the incident initially left them stunned, as many did not immediately realise that the pilot involved was someone they had known for years. Gandhi said the community later learnt that Machchhar had undergone surgery and was recovering.

According to neighbours, Machchhar’s family had travelled to Dubai and remained by his side. Residents said the community continued to await further updates while praying for his speedy recovery.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Machchhar as a hero, saying the pilot had prevented a disaster comparable to the September 11 attacks despite sustaining injuries during the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded Machchhar’s actions. In a message posted on X, Modi said the pilot had displayed exceptional courage and determination in the face of grave danger while safeguarding the lives of others. The Prime Minister added that the country was proud of Machchhar.

Neighbours said the pilot’s actions had helped protect the lives of more than 180 passengers and crew members on board the aircraft. They described his conduct as selfless and courageous, noting that he had put his own safety at risk to save others.

Residents also recalled helping Machchhar’s family leave for the airport after learning of the incident. One neighbour said members of the housing society assisted with luggage, while local resident Akshay Doshi drove the family to the airport as they were not in a position to travel on their own.

Machchhar’s alma mater, Welingkar Institute, where he pursued an online management programme in 2007-08, also paid tribute to him. Dr Pankaj Natu, Director of WeSchool, said Machchhar’s courage, discipline and commitment had become an inspiration and described him as a true hero in the skies.
