Calcutta HC dismisses PIL against cancellation of Bengal govt’s R-Day tableau

The Calcutta High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) over the rejection of the West Bengal government’s tableau for the Republic Day parade in Delhi, observing that the matter cannot be judged in such a short period.

The PIL was filed by advocate Ramprasad Sarkar, who had sought a direction to the Centre to allow of the state’s tableau in the Republic Day parade which will be held on January 26.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, said in the order, “As the Republic Day celebration is day after tomorrow, no effective direction can be issued at this stage. Hence, no case for interference in the present writ petition is made out, which is accordingly dismissed.”


The Centre and the Bengal government were at loggerheads over rejection ofnetaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s tableau from Bengal on the Republic Day parade. The tableau was not selected, following which West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to reconsider the decision.

Following PM Narendra Modi tweets on Friday about installation of a grand granite statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate, with Trinamool leadership claimed that it an attempt to hide the Bengal's tableau controversy.
