Calcutta HC directs CBI to takeover former RG Kar principal's financial irregularities case from SIT

The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the SIT to hand over its case related to the financial irregularities against former RG Kar principal Dr Sandeep Ghosh to the CBI. The central probe agency is expected to takeover the case diary, CCTV footage, and any other document related to the case by 10 am on Saturday.

The matter was therein listed for next hearing on September 7, while the CBI was asked to hand in a progress report to the high court bench within three weeks of the case transfer.

A single-judge bench of Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj was hearing a plea alleging serious financial illegalities committed by former RG Kar Hospital principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh.


The Kolkata Police on August 20 began an investigation against Ghosh for his alleged involvement in "financial irregularities" in the RG Kar Hospital and Medical College, a senior officer had said.

The probe against Ghosh commenced after a four-member SIT was constituted to investigate the alleged financial irregularities at the state-run health facility where the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found earlier this month.

Ghosh is also expected to undergo a polygraph test on Friday which a special court allowed the CBI to perform in relation to the rape-murder case of the doctor they are investigating.

Notably, Ghosh was appointed as the principal of the hospital in 2021.

The former principal was questioned by the CBI for the last eight days in connection with its probe into the rape and murder of the doctor that has sparked nationwide protests and resulted in a CJI-led Supreme Court bench to take suo motu congnisance of the incident.
