The Calcutta HC on Thursday directed the West Bengal government to submit a progress report along with the case diary on the investigation into the law student rape case within seven days. A division bench headed by Justice Soumen Sen also directed the state education department to shut down union rooms in all colleges and universities.

The court issued the directions while hearing three PILs on the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student on the campus of a South Kolkata law college by an alumnus and two seniors on June 25. The next hearing is scheduled for July 10. The college has also been asked to file a report on its probe into the alleged crime.

The HC, in another petition on the same issue, directed the state home department to issue an advisory, if required, to all media houses and lodge appropriate complaints if any attempt is made on the social media to confuse the identity of the victim.
