The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approvedMinistry of Youth Affairs & Sports' submission of a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, backing Ahmedabad as the proposed host city.

The decision also paves the way for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and extending financial support to the Gujarat government if the bid is successful.

Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet endorsed Indian Olympic Association's proposal, which includes guarantees from relevant ministries and departments to meet the event’s requirements.

Ahmedabad pitched as ideal host

Ahmedabad has been positioned as a city with world-class sporting infrastructure, modern training facilities, and a vibrant sports culture. A key highlight is the Narendra Modi Stadium — the world’s largest cricket stadium — which successfully staged the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final.

If India’s bid goes through, athletes from 72 nations and territories are expected to compete in the Games, bringing with them coaches, technical officials, media personnel, and thousands of spectators.

According to the government, the large-scale international participation would directly benefit local businesses and generate significant revenue for the economy.

The government emphasised that hosting the Games would not only provide a platform for sporting excellence but also deliver lasting economic and social benefits.

The mega event is expected to create jobs, stimulate tourism, and open up opportunities in sectors such as sports science, event management, logistics, transport, broadcasting, IT, and communications.

The Games could inspire millions of young Indians to pursue sports professionally while strengthening national pride and unity.

“Hosting such a globally prestigious event will provide a shared national experience and encourage greater participation in sports at all levels,” the Cabinet statement noted.

If India succeeds in its bid, it will mark the country’s second stint as a Commonwealth Games host after New Delhi organised the 2010 edition.
