Sachin Rana, the accused and resident of Mirzapur village under Badgaon police station, was determined to pursue overseas studies, but his academic gap years (having completed class 12 in 2013) made it challenging for him to obtain a visa legitimately. In April 2022, Sachin used his brother Gautam's credentials to obtain a counterfeit passport and subsequently secured a study visa for Singapore. He departed for Singapore in June 2022.
According to SP (rural) Sagar Jain in Saharanpur, Sachin contacted an overseas education consultant in early 2022 who facilitated his admission to Trent Global College of Technology and Management in Singapore using Gautam's forged documents.
Sachin had enrolled in a diploma program, but returned early after just six months, due to default in payment of final installment of fee. He tried to work at a local bar to earn some money but that didn't work. He eventually returned India in December the same year.
The forgery was caught this year in March when Gautam applied for a passport to visit Dubai. But, shockingly he found that a passport had already been issued under his name. This raised suspicion in his mind. He reported the fraud to the regional passport office in Ghaziabad, and the case was referred to the Saharanpur police.
An FIR was registered against Sachin in May under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to cheating, forgery of valuable documents, and fraudulent use of genuine documents.
Recently, Sachin was arrested when he returned to Saharanpur for some work.
Gautam, who works as a direct selling agent for a bank in Karnal, Haryana, expressing surprise and confusion, said that he had no knowledge of the forged documents since they were kept at home.
