Bulli Bai app case: Shweta Singh, 18-year-old mastermind, detained from Uttarakhand; one more arrested

The Mumbai Police have arrested a 21-year-old engineering student from Bengaluru and detained an 18-year-old woman from Uttarakhand in the Bulli bai app case, where photos of Muslim women were allegedly misused and put online.

The student, Vishal Kumar Jha, and the woman named Shweta Singh knew each other and have coordinated with each other on operating the app and posting the pictures and abusing the Muslim women in it, police officials said. Police have brought Jha to Mumbai and he is now in their custody. The woman, who is being questioned, will also be arrested and brought to Mumbai on Wednesday, they said.

Police officials said prima facie Shweta Singh seemed to be the mastermind behind the app and was found to be operating several accounts linked to the Bulli bai app. Jha had opened an account in the name of a Khalsa supporter in order to create an impression that a member of the Sikh community was behind creating the app, they said.


The officials said they have electronic evidence. Several other people could also be involved in helping the duo create the app and upload the photos, they said.

The Bulli bai app case came to light after several prominent Muslim women including journalists found their photos being uploaded on the Bulli bai app and vulgar comments solicited on them. A police complaint was lodged at the Mumbai police cyber cell on January 1.
