BRICS 2026: PM Modi wants bloc to look beyond its borders and serve wider Global South

India has sought to make BRICS a platform for inclusive global growth, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying solutions developed by the grouping should be accessible and adaptable to the needs of the Global South.

PM Modi, speaking on the second day of the BRICS Summit on Sunday, said, “Confidence of Global South countries in BRICS has increased because their voices are heard in BRICS.”

In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister also said the weaponisation of technology and critical minerals could hinder shared progress, making inclusive technology adoption important.

Modi handed over the BRICS chairmanship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, with China set to host the 2027 summit.

BRICS Early Warning System

BRICS has placed a strong focus on building resilience against pandemics, climate disasters and supply-chain disruptions, Modi said.

“Under India’s presidency, we have focused all our efforts on four pillars — resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. I am happy that, with everyone’s cooperation and support, we have been able to turn our shared vision into various areas of cooperation,” Modi said.

He added that BRICS must focus on identifying challenges early, preparing for them and responding quickly.

“Therefore, the BRICS grouping has placed special emphasis on strengthening resilience,” Modi said, adding that the grouping had agreed on a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System for preventing and responding to infectious diseases.

Modi further said Early Warning Data Integration Guidelines had been prepared for disaster management.

The BRICS Logistics Supply Chain Cooperation Framework, he added, would help make supply chains “more reliable and resilient.”

BRICS Urban Mobility Hub

A BRICS Urban Mobility Hub has been established to help cities share best practices, Indian Prime Minister said.

India had used the BRICS platform to promote friendship, partnership and cooperation, while ensuring that its work was not limited to governments, he stated.

“Through BRICS Connect, we have promoted skills, employability, women’s participation in the workforce, social security and capacity building,” Modi said.

He also added that the BRICS MSME Cooperation Portal had been launched to connect small enterprises with knowledge, finance and new markets.

BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence

Modi in his remarks said India has emphasised balancing human development with the environment under BRICS, calling it the foundation of sustainability and a responsibility towards future generations.

“In this direction, we have made progress on several initiatives. We have created a BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for smart grids and energy storage. This will help make our clean energy systems more reliable, efficient and accessible."

"Centres of Excellence for agro-ecology and regenerative agriculture will connect traditional knowledge with modern science. At the same time, the principles prepared for community-based climate adaptation will make indigenous knowledge an important foundation of climate action.”

Modi-Xi meeting

PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged ​yesterday to build up ​business and transport links, central goverment said, as both rebuild ties ​badly damaged by 2020 military clash on the Himalayan border.

Modi and Xi met on the sidelines of a summit of the BRICS group of emerging nations in New Delhi — ‌Xi's first trip ⁠to ⁠India in seven years.

"The two leaders ... underscored the need to further ​promote cultural exchanges, business linkages and greater mobility between the two countries," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

"On economic and trade relations, they underlined the need to address ​each other’s concerns, including structural trade imbalance and supply ⁠chain issues, and ‌facilitation of meaningful and predictable market access," it said.

BRICS declaration

The BRICS ​group ​unanimously adopted a joint declaration on Saturday, ​expressing "deep concern" over the war in the Middle East and urged maximum restraint, advocating for a "multilateral approach" that respects national ‌viewpoints.

The declaration, ⁠adopted ⁠on the first day of the BRICS leaders' annual ​summit in New Delhi, came at a time when US and ​Iran have resumed tit-for-tat strikes against each other, after a pause in fighting for much of ​August.

The BRICS bloc includes both Iran ⁠and Washington-ally ‌United Arab Emirates, which was expected ​to ​make clinching a joint statement consensus a ⁠particularly challenging task for host New Delhi.

"We ​express deep concern over the continued escalation ​of tensions in Middle East...call for exercising maximum restraint...avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation," the 'New Delhi Declaration' said.

The declaration also reiterated the commitment of member nations to a peaceful ‌resolution of international disputes "through dialogue, consultation, and diplomacy".

In addition, they voiced concerns about the ​rise of "unilateral ​tariff and non-tariff ⁠measures" that distort trade, against the backdrop of U.S. sanctions against Tehran amid its war with the country, ​and against Russia over its conflict with Ukraine.

BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
