BNP govt seeks ‘win-win’ India ties, says Bangladesh foreign affairs panel chief

Bangladesh's newly elected BNP-led government wants to maintain a constructive and mutually beneficial relationship with India while pursuing a "Bangladesh First" foreign policy, the chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs said.

Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told ANI that India, as Bangladesh's largest neighbour, remains important to Dhaka and that bilateral ties should be built around a "win-win strategy".

"When it comes to foreign relationships, we have presented our 'Bangladesh First' approach. And that is very clear -- that we want to build all our foreign relationships based on a win-win strategy," Chowdhury said, according to ANI.


He said Bangladesh wants to address issues including border management, long-pending water-sharing agreements and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's presence in Delhi through structured and professional diplomatic channels.

Chowdhury said the BNP government would seek to handle these matters while protecting Bangladesh's national dignity and rights, adding that Dhaka does not want "any animosity" with its neighbours.

"At the same time, we want to be treated with full dignity, with respect, and based on our due rights, and with acknowledgement of our rights and the win-win relationship," he said, as quoted by ANI.

Chowdhury also stressed the need for both countries to contribute to long-term regional stability and cooperation, with bilateral engagement focused on outcomes that benefit people in Bangladesh and India.
