The government is expected to introduce Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The six-page bill, circulated among members on Tuesday, introduces a single amendment in Section 5(2) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014. Section 5(1) of the Act declares Hyderabad as the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for 10 years - till June 2024. Section 5(2) reads, "After expiry of the period referred to in sub-section (1), Hyderabad shall be the capital of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra Pradesh." The amendment to be introduced will read, "Amaravati shall be the new capital".
ET was the first to report on May 2, 2025, that Naidu had sought legal sanctity for Amaravati. On December 3, ET reported that an amendment would be brought in Section 5 of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act to include Amaravati as the state's capital.
On March 28, the Andhra Pradesh assembly had passed a resolution requesting the Union government to amend Section 5 of the Act to incorporate 'Amaravati' as the new capital of the successor state of Andhra Pradesh.
