A senior government officer was arrested for arriving at a function allegedly in an inebriated condition in Bihar's Supaul district, officials said on Saturday.

Sale and consumption of alcohol was banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government in April 2016.

The district fisheries officer, Supaul, has been arrested and sent to jail, District Magistrate Sawan Kumar said.

"The officer arrived at a government function, which was attended by a state minister, on Thursday under the influence of alcohol. I got suspicious and called the excise department officials to conduct his breath-analyser test, which also confirmed that he had consumed alcohol," Kumar said.

"There are reports that he is a habitual offender of the state's prohibition laws. I have written to the competent authority for his dismissal from service," the DM added.
