India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take limited questions from journalists in the United States after delivering remarks with US President Joe Biden.

Beyond occasional pre-recorded interviews, it is unusual for Narendra Modi to take questions from the press, as he has never addressed a single press conference in India since he became the prime minister of the world's biggest democracy in 2014.

In May 2019, Modi attended a news conference but he never took questions.

The White House confirmed the development, terming it a "big deal".

"We are just grateful that Prime Minister Modi is participating in a press event at the end of the visit. We think that's important and we're glad he thinks that's important too," John Kirby, the White House's national security spokesperson.

Lab-grown diamonds are produced through two technologies - High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). India is one of the leading producers of these diamonds using CVD technology. As per industry estimates, India's share in its global trade in the financial year 2021-22 was 25.8 per cent. However, India has to depend on other countries for the supply of critical machinery components and seeds -- which are the raw materials for producing synthetic diamonds.

The press conference's format will include one question from the US press and one from an Indian journalist, Kirby said.

White House press conferences with other world leaders have been tightly controlled, as U.S. officials designate reporters in advance from the American and foreign media for Biden and his guest to call upon, and a very limited number of questions, Reuters said.

Modi is currently in the US, and will be till June 24, at the invitation of President Joe Biden and the First Lady.

The PM arrived in Washington from New York where he led a historic event at the UN headquarters earlier in the day to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities.
