Bhutan GLOF alert: Assam, Bengal districts on high alert as floodwaters threaten

Guwahati: The Assam government has said that a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) has been reported at Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan's Punatsangchhu river basin by the Indian Embassy.

Following reports of flash floods in the upper reaches of the Punatsangchhu river (known as the Sankosh river in India), water levels are likely to rise suddenly in the districts of Alipurduar in West Bengal and Dhubri in Assam.

According to the special advisory issued for West Bengal and Assam, floodwaters are expected to travel downstream and reach the border within 6-8 hours. The districts of Alipurduar and Dhubri are likely to be affected.


Local authorities in the two districts along the Sankosh river have been advised to remain alert, closely monitor the situation and take necessary precautionary measures.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X: "We are closely monitoring the possible impact of the glacial lake outburst in Bhutan across all vulnerable revenue circles of Dhubri and Kokrajhar. Our teams are also in constant contact with the NDRF and other agencies and are ready to respond if needed. Residents are requested to stay alert, follow official updates and cooperate with local officials."
