A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of his 32-year-old wife, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase at their rented house in south Bengaluru.

The shocking crime came to light on Thursday evening when the accused, identified as Rakesh Rajendra Khedekar, called his landlord and confessed to the murder, informing him that he had killed his wife, Gouri Anil Sambrekar, the previous night and fled the city.

Gouri, a graduate in mass media, had recently moved to Bengaluru from Mumbai in search of employment.

Rakesh, a project manager at a software firm, and Gouri had been living in a first-floor house in Doddakammanahalli, near Hulimavu, for just a month. The couple had relocated to Bengaluru recently, though the exact date of their move remains unclear.

According to the police, Rakesh made a call to their landlord around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, informing him of the murder and asking him to alert the police and Gouri's family for the funeral.

The landlord, in shock, rushed to the house but found the door locked from the outside. Concerned, he immediately contacted emergency helpline 112.

Hulimavu police responded to the call, and upon forcing entry into the house, they discovered Gouri's body stuffed into a trolley suitcase. Authorities also found that Rakesh’s mobile phone was still switched on, which became crucial for tracking him down.

Using this information, DCP (southeast) Sarah Fathima coordinated with the Maharashtra police. Bengaluru's police force quickly traveled to Pune and, with the help of their Maharashtra counterparts, apprehended Rakesh around 9:30 p.m. as he was driving towards Pune.

Rakesh is currently being brought back to Bengaluru for further questioning. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are piecing together the events that led to the tragic incident.
