Suspected food poisoning claimed the life of a woman in Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural limits, reports said on December 25. As many as 70 other people have been hospitalised in the case, news agency PTI said.

The suspected cause of the food poisoning is believed to be consumption of an edible offering at a local place of worship. Some of the hospitalized individuals have been discharged, while others continue to receive medical treatment, with the health department closely monitoring the situation.

While the incident is currently considered a case of food poisoning, the exact cause cannot be confirmed at this early stage of the investigation, poilce said.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that on Saturday, many people visited a temple in Hoskote town and consumed 'prasad.' The following day, some individuals reported symptoms such as dysentery and vomiting, leading them to seek medical attention. Unfortunately, a woman with similar symptoms, admitted to a hospital on Sunday afternoon, passed away on Monday.

Around 70 people have been admitted to various hospitals, with the health department identifying five hospitals where the majority of patients are receiving treatment. One hospital has dedicated an entire floor to treat ICU patients. Patients suspect that the 'prasad' consumed at the temple on Saturday may have caused the alleged food poisoning.

However, there are also cases of individuals who did not consume the 'prasad' but still experienced symptoms. The police are in the process of recording statements from these patients, and while no complaint has been registered yet, an investigation is underway.
