Bengaluru Metro rides are set to become more expensive, with fares increasing by about 50% from Sunday. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced the fare hike on Saturday based on recommendations from the Fare Fixation Committee. This is the first time the Metro will also introduce different fares for peak and non-peak hours, similar to cab services like Ola and Uber.

Revised Fare Structure

The maximum Metro fare will now be Rs 90 instead of Rs 60, while the minimum balance required in smart cards has been raised from Rs 50 to Rs 90. The new fare breakdown is as follows:
  • 0-2 km: Rs 10
  • 2-4 km: Rs 20
  • 4-6 km: Rs 30
  • 6-8 km: Rs 40
  • 8-10 km: Rs 50
  • 10-12 km: Rs 60
  • 15-20 km: Rs 70
  • 20-25 km: Rs 80
  • 25-30 km and above: Rs 90

Peak and Non-Peak Hour Pricing

BMRCL has introduced peak and non-peak hour fares, offering discounts to smart card users. A five per cent discount will be available during peak hours, and an additional five per cent discount will apply during non-peak hours, making it a total of 10 per cent off during non-peak times.

Non-peak hours:
  • From the start of Metro services until 8 AM
  • Noon to 4 PM
  • 9 PM to closing time on weekdays
Additionally, Metro users will get a 10% discount on smart card fares on Sundays and national holidays.

Why the Fare Hike?

BMRCL explained that the Fare Fixation Committee submitted its report on December 16, 2024, recommending the new fare structure. "As per section 37 of the Metro Railway O&M Act, the recommendations made by the Fare Fixation Committee shall be binding on the Metro Railway Administration," BMRCL said in a statement. With the approval of the BMRCL Board, the new fares will be effective from February 9, 2025.

Recent Transport Fare Hikes in Karnataka

This Metro fare hike comes soon after a 15% increase in government bus fares across Karnataka, adding to the burden on daily commuters.

Political Reactions

Last month, Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan had posted on 'X' that the proposed Metro fare hike had been put on hold.

"BMRCL's proposed 45% metro fare hike, set for Feb 1, has been put on hold. The Modi government has directed BMRCL to submit a comprehensive report before making any decision. A big win for the people of Bengaluru - ensuring transparency, accountability, and fair metro pricing," he had posted.
