Bengaluru: Live-in couple from Odisha found dead in apartment, police suspect suicide

A young couple from Odisha was found dead inside their rented home in Kallabalu, Anekal, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide, according to a TOI report.

Neighbours grew concerned on Tuesday morning after receiving no response from the locked house and alerted the landlord. Upon peeking through the ventilator, he discovered both hanging in the bedroom.

Jigani police stated that no suicide notes were found, and their phones contained no messages indicating a motive.


The deceased were identified as 23-year-old Rakesh Kumar and 25-year-old Seema Nayak, who had moved to Anekal about three months ago in search of work. Rakesh was employed as housekeeping staff at a private company, while Seema worked as an assistant in a nearby supermarket.

Forensic experts suggest that Rakesh hanged himself from the ceiling fan after midnight on Sunday. "According to forensic science laboratory experts, deaths occurred post-Sunday midnight. We suspect Seema saw Rakesh hanging and tried to loosen the noose in vain. When she realised he was dead, she hanged herself," an investigating officer told TOI.

Meanwhile, friends reported that tensions and frequent arguments had marked their relationship. Jora Nayak, a close friend, revealed that Rakesh suspected Seema of an affair and struggled with alcohol addiction.

"Also, Rakesh was addicted to alcohol. Rakesh told me that Seema was transferring money to some other man and that's why he suspected her. Every day, they would fight with each other over this," Nayak told the news outlet.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting detailed forensic reports to determine the exact sequence of events.
