Kolkata, along with other parts of Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand, is set to experience severe weather conditions from Friday to Sunday, according to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The city and its surrounding regions are likely to be impacted by thunderstorms, squally winds, hailstorms, and lightning, bringing a much needed respite from the heat.

These extreme weather conditions are expected to affect isolated pockets in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata, as well as areas in Odisha and Jharkhand, with wind speeds reaching up to 50-60 kmph, accompanied by hailstorms and lightning.


Bengal IMD Bulletin: IMD issues warning


Squally weather is forecasted along the West Bengal coast, including the state capital, with wind speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph in certain areas, said IMD.

The weather agency has issued warnings for several districts in Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapore, where thunderstorms are expected to intensify throughout the weekend.

Additionally, areas in Odisha and Jharkhand are also expected to experience similar weather, with the possibility of hailstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph.

The intensity of the weather is expected to increase on March 22, with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph and lightning and hailstorms predicted in isolated locations across Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bengal.

Bengal Weather: Fishermen alerts ring


The IMD also mentioned that fishermen along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts should avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.

For March 23, similar conditions are expected to persist across parts of Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and other regions like Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, where gusty winds and thunderstorms will continue to affect daily life.

The IMD has stressed the importance of remaining cautious and staying updated on weather alerts throughout the weekend.
