More than 200 people have been arrested in connection with violence in the last few days following suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma's remarks on the Prophet even as fresh violence erupted in Nakashipara of Nadia on Monday as shops were vandalised in the area on Monday morning by protesters.

Section144 has been imposed in Nadia's Bethuadahari and Nakashipara and 25 people have been arrested in Nakashipara. A huge contingent of police has been deployed in Nadia. On Monday evening, violence erupted again in Nakashipara. However, police brought the situation under control and had to lob tear gas shells. In Kolkata's Kazipara, protestors resorted to railway blockade near Sealdah station.

Additional Director General (Law & Order), West Bengal Police, Jawed Shamim, speaking on the widespread violence in the state, said, "More than 200 people has been arrested and 42 FIRs have been registered. No one will be spared. Strict action will be taken against those involved and they will be booked. We will ensure maximum punishment."


Shamim said that in Nadia district, 29 were arrested in Bethuadahari while in Nakashipara more than 25 were arrested.
