Bengal teachers' scam: ED to file final chargesheet
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is readying its final prosecution complaint (equivalent to chargesheet) in the teachers recruitment corruption case. The federal agency will file its final prosecution complaint after quizzing former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and his alleged close aide Arpita Mukherjee, people in the know told ET. The two have been summoned by the agency for questioning.

When asked about the reason for fresh summons issued to the duo, an official on the condition of anonymity said that fresh references to Chatterjee and Mukherjee have been discovered in several alleged incriminating documents relating to the teachers recruitment corruption case. The duo will be questioned separately, he added.

Chatterjee was arrested in July 2022 in the School Service Commission teachers' recruitment corruption case in West Bengal. Arpita Mukherjee was also arrested after heaps of cash and ornaments were allegedly recovered from her apartment. Besides ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also investigating the SSC recruitment corruption case.

Last September, the Calcutta High Court had granted bail to Chatterjee. Despite the order, Chatterjee was not released immediately due to a Supreme Court order, which said that Chatterjee be released only after the trial court completes the examination of material witnesses within two months.

A division bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and NK Singh had ordered that the statements must be recorded within two months. The top Court had noted that Chatterjee had been in jail for nearly three years and his continued incarceration would be tantamount to travesty of justice.
