Bay of Bengal cyclone updates: IMD says Mocha may intensify into cyclonic storm by May 10

Providing update on cyclone Mocha, India Meteorological Department today said that the low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression by today evening over the same region and then into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal nd adjoining areas of east central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on 10th May.

The cyclonic storm, according to IMD, is expected to move initially north-northwestwards till 11th May and thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal. Sea condition is likely to be rough over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea from 9th May onwards. The weather office also asked those who are over the east-central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea to return.


"Those who are over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea are advised to return to safer places by today, the 8th May and those over eastcentral Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea are advised to return by 9th May," IMD said in a bulletin.

Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy precipitation at isolated places is likely over Andaman and Nicobar islands from Tuesday to Thursday, the Met department said.

It also advised authorities concerned to regulate tourism and offshore activities near Andaman and Nicobar Islands till 12th May.
