PM Modi and Bangladesh interim govt's head Muhammad Yunus
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Bangladesh government's interim head and Noble Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus and extended India's full support in restoration of peace in the neighbouring country.

The Bangladesh Government's interim head called Modi and said that the reports of attacks on minorities have been exaggerated and that he is inviting India journalists to visit the country, Reuters reported.

However, Yunus has assured protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh, said PM Modi in a social media post.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, who resigned and fled to India on August 5 amid massive protests over a controversial job quota system, reports have surfaced that Bangladesh experienced a surge in violence against the Hindu community.

During the protests, many Hindu homes, shops, and businesses were targeted. Yunus met with Hindu community leaders earlier this week and promised their safety.

Yunus also agreed to PM Modi's invitation to join virtual 3rd Voice of Global South Summit on Saturday

Further, the 84-year-old economist also informed Modi that situation in Bangladesh has been brought under control and life is becoming normal.

"Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh," Modi said.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech on Thursday at the Red Fort, flagged concerns over the unrest in neighboring Bangladesh that led to a government change and attacks on Hindus and other minorities.

The BJP leader had reassured Bangladesh of India’s continued support for its economic development.

"As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope that the situation there will become normal soon," he had said.

"In particular, the concerns of 140 crore countrymen is that the safety and security of Hindus and minorities there is ensured. India always wants that the neighbouring country marches on the path of peace and prosperity," Modi had said.

"We hope the situation normalizes there soon," he said.
