Bengaluru and parts of South Interior Karnataka are bracing for a spell of intense rainfall as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for December 2, 2024.

The city and its surrounding areas are expected to experience very heavy rainfall, accompanied by potential disruptions. This comes as part of the cyclone Fengal, which crossed the Tamil Nadu coast on November 30 night.

Bangalore schools update

As of now, there is no official word on whether or not the schools in Bengaluru will be shut for the day. Therefore, the schools and colleges will function as usual.

A widespread request for closure of schools is being demanded by X users.

"Horrible weather in Bengaluru. Wondering why Govt hasn’t declared holiday for schools today," said one user.

Another user said, "@DC_BUrban Please declare holiday today for Bengaluru schools. It is raining continuously. We are scared to send our children to school."

Why is Bengaluru witnessing rains?

The city is witnessing heavy rains most likely due to the cyclonic storm, Fengal.

As per the weather watchdog, the cyclonic storm is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a Well Marked Low pressure area over north interior Tamil Nadu during the next 6 hours.

"The remnant low pressure area is likely to emerge over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around 3rd December 2024," the IMD said in a post on X.

Kerala, too, set for heavy rains

According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is also forecast over Kerala and Mahe, with authorities urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Apart from Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also under a very heavy rainfall alert. Coastal Karnataka and Rayalaseema regions are expected to receive heavy rainfall, as indicated by the IMD.
