Avoid these areas: Delhi Metro issues urgent kite flying warning for Independence Day
As Independence Day approaches, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has issued an advisory urging the public to avoid flying kites near elevated metro lines. The advisory aims to ensure both the safety of kite flyers and the smooth operation of metro services.

DMRC Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal highlighted the risks associated with kite flying in areas close to metro lines. "As kite flying becomes popular around August 15, there is a risk of kite strings becoming entangled in the overhead equipment (OHE) wires or getting caught in the pantograph of a moving train," Dayal explained.

Such incidents could not only disrupt metro services by damaging the OHE or pantograph but could also pose serious safety hazards, particularly if metallic kite strings are used.

The DMRC has a comprehensive system in place to manage and prevent potential disruptions caused by kite strings, including dedicated teams to quickly remove any entangled strings. Despite these measures, the corporation urges the public to refrain from flying kites in the vicinity of elevated metro lines to avoid accidents and service interruptions.

Kite flying is a cherished tradition in Delhi-NCR, especially during Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan. To ensure the safety of metro passengers and maintain uninterrupted metro services, the DMRC recommends enjoying kite flying in open spaces away from metro infrastructure.

The DMRC operates a network of nearly 400 kilometres across Delhi-NCR, predominantly elevated with live OHE wires carrying 25,000 volts to power the trains. The corporation's advisory is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure safe and reliable metro services for all passengers.
