GST registration changes to get automatic approval for business name, additional address updates

The government has simplified the process for amending GST registration details. It is now allowing changes to a business's legal name, constitution and additional place of business to be processed automatically without approval from an officer.
According to the frequently asked questions (FAQs) on amendments to GST registration, which was posted on October 9, changes to the principal place of business will also be processed automatically for taxpayers registered under Rule 14A of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Rules, 2017.

However, amendments to the principal place of business for other GST registrations will continue to be classified as core amendments and require approval from the proper officer.

Businesses seeking to change their legal name must submit an application in Form GST REG-14 on the common portal. Once the application is submitted successfully and the Permanent Account Number (PAN) details are validated, the system will amend the legal name.

To add an additional place of business, applicants must file Form GST REG-14 along with the required documents proving the place of business, as specified in the list attached to Form GST REG-01. The system will process the application automatically and add the new address to the registration.

Taxpayers registered under the simplified registration scheme under Rule 14A can follow the same process to change their principal place of business. They must submit Form GST REG-14 with the prescribed supporting documents, after which the system will automatically amend the registration details.

For regular taxpayers registered under Rule 9 of the CGST Rules, the process for changing the principal place of business will continue to involve scrutiny by the proper officer.

If there are no discrepancies, the officer must approve the application within 15 days of its submission. If discrepancies are found, the officer must issue a show-cause notice within the same period.

The applicant must respond to the notice within seven working days of its issuance. After receiving the reply, the officer must take action within seven working days.

The FAQs also clarify that businesses seeking to add multiple additional places of business will not need to wait for approval of an earlier application before filing another amendment request, as such changes will be processed automatically by the system.
