The train hit the cylinder and came to a screeching halt on Sunday morning. The cylinder was thrown away from the tracks due to the impact, added the police.
Senior officials rushed to the spot soon after being informed of the incident at around 8:20 am on Sunday. An investigation has been launched in the matter.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has taken up the case and a forensic team was called to the spot.
An FIR has been registered in the matter and multiple teams have been formed to probe the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Rajesh Kumar Singh said the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) has launched an investigation separately.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chandra told PTI that the loco pilot saw that the LPG cylinder was placed on the tracks and applied the emergency brakes.
After the train came to a halt, the loco pilot informed the guard and the gateman about the incident, he said.
The train stopped for 20 minutes at the site of the incident and was stationed at the Bilhaur station for investigation, Chandra said.
A bottle of petrol and matchbox were also recovered from the spot along with the damaged cylinder, Chandra added. He said that the culprits would be dealt with sternly.
