In a deadly accident, at least 18 people were killed and 19 injured when a bus collided with a tanker on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in this Uttar Pradesh district on Wednesday, police said. The accident happened around 5:15 am.

The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Unnao. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.

Initial investigation has revealed that the deadly crash happened owing to overspeeding. "Today at around 05.15 AM, a private bus coming from Motihari, Bihar collided with a milk tanker. 18 people have lost their lives and 19 others are injured in the accident. After the initial investigation, it looks like the bus was overspeeding. The injured are getting treatment..." said Unnao DM Gaurang Rathi.


The accident took place in the morning near Jojikot village in the Bangarmau area when the double-decker bus collided with the tanker, killing 18 people and injuring 19, Bangarmau Circle Officer Arvind Kumar said. The injured have been rushed to a hospital and their condition is stated to be stable, the officer said.

On receiving the information of the incident, police reached the spot, took out all the injured and admitted them to CHC Bangarmau for treatment and necessary action is being taken by taking the bodies in custody, informed Behtamujawar Police.

As details of the deadly crash emerged, Uttar Pradesh CMO informed that Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the road accident in Unnao district and expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased. "CM directed the officials to reach the spot immediately and expedite the relief work," said Chief Minister Office.

Previously, six were killed on Tuesday in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi and Sultanpur districts, police said. In Hardoi, four persons were killed and six others injured in the Madhoganj area when a bus lost control and overturned on a hut, they said.
