Assam's Mising community suspends Arunachal Pradesh blockade after 48-hour ultimatum for accused

Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), the apex student organisation of Assam's Mising community, has suspended the economic blockade of Arunachal Pradesh.

The body has given a 48-hour ultimatum to nab the four accused in the August 10 firing incident and hand them over to Assam Police.

Assam’s Education minister Ranoj Pegu stated in X on late Thursday night, “I highly appreciate the decision of the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) to call off its road blockade against Arunachal Pradesh following assurances regarding the arrest of those responsible for opening fire on villagers of Bodoti village in Dhemaji district. I also deeply appreciate the constructive role played by the Adi Bane Kebang and the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) in facilitating a meaningful dialogue between TMPK, the Galo Welfare Association and the Galo Youth Organisation at Likabali today. Civil society has an invaluable role in maintaining peace and harmony. People-to-people dialogue helps build trust, remove misunderstandings and strengthen the bonds between communities living along our inter-state border. With the continued support and cooperation of civil society organisations and the people on both sides of the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, I am confident that we can move towards a permanent and mutually acceptable resolution of the border issues and grow together in a spirit of peace, mutual respect and shared prosperity.”


Pegu further stated, “I visited the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh to meet with the injured individuals from the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border firing incident and assess their health conditions. The treatment of 8 injured persons in the hospital's Super Speciality Block is ongoing under the supervision of Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan along with other doctors. Today, the surgery for one injured person has been completed, and the surgery for another injured person who sustained eye injuries will be performed tomorrow. The doctors have assured that all the injured are currently out of danger and they will be able to leave the hospital very soon.”

TMPK and other local groups on Wednesday launched an indefinite economic blockade of Arunachal Pradesh in protest of the firing incident in which 12 indigenous people from Assam were injured.

"Following these discussions, assurances were given regarding immediate action on the core demands raised by TMPK. In view of these assurances and in consideration of the difficulties being faced by the common people, TMPK has decided to temporarily suspend the blockade," a statement signed by its president Tilak Doley and general secretary Sun Donyi Panging said.

Officials had on Thursday said that there was an incident of stone pelting at Likabali. Protestors alleged, “Three rounds were fired in the air to control the mob.”

Normal vehicular movement started on Friday between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
