Police said there have been no fresh incidents and no reports of arson. Additional security forces remain stationed in the area.
At least two people have died in the district over the past two days after clashes broke out between protesters and police during an agitation against alleged illegal encroachments on land protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Several houses were set on fire, triggering tension in the area.
Violence intensified in the Kheroni area on Tuesday, where protesters vandalised and looted shops in the market. Several people, including police personnel, were injured. The unrest is centred in Dongkamokam, where residents have been agitating for days demanding eviction of alleged illegal occupants from protected government land. Protesters also launched an indefinite hunger strike on December 16, seeking action from the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
Assam DGP Harmeet Singh said around 60 police personnel had been injured, some of them seriously.
