Assam tribal communities protest in Guwahati; demand ban on religious conversion of tribals

Thousands of people from tribal communities in Assam took out a big rally in main city Guwahati on Sunday demanding a ban on religious conversion of tribals across the state and to remove the Scheduled Tribe status of people who have converted to other religions.

Held under the banner of the Janajati Dharma Sanskriti Suraksha Manch, an affiliate of the BJP's ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the participants came from at least 30 districts in Assam.

Binud Kumbang Co-Convener & Working President, JDSSM, Assam Pradesh stated, “The objectives of the Massive Tribal rally aretTo Delist Converted STs who completely given up their original tribal culture, customs, rituals, way of life and traditions after conversion and stop unethical conversion.”


The organisation added, “Demanding Amendment of Article 342 for ST and equalize with Article 341 for Scheduled Caste (if any SC person being converted to any other religion, automatically the person gets Delisted from SC reservation).”

Separate memorandums would be sent to the President and the Prime Minister of India via the Governor of Assam.
