Assam student arrested for supporting proscribed militant outfit

In Assam, a student was arrested for making a social media post supporting the proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).

Udalguri district police have arrested a 22-year-old college student Pramod Kalita, a second-year graduate student of Tangla College.

He was arrested on Sunday from Kalaigaon, and produced in a local court on Monday and the court has remanded him to judicial custody. The student has professed his liking for the outfit and its leader Paresh Baruah in social media post.


Kalita has been booked under sections 120B, 121, 121A of Indian Penal Code read with Section 39 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for criminal conspiracy, waging or attempting to wage war against the state and supporting a terrorist outfit.

A local court in Assam’s Golaghat district last week allowed Barshashree Buragohain, who has been languishing in Golaghat central jail for 58 days for allegedly writing a pro poem on ULFA-I to appear for exams.

ULFA-I or anti talk faction of ULFA is a proscribed militant outfit. Buragohain was picked up on May 17 for posting “anti-national” poems on social media.

Her family members have appealed to the Assam government to let her appear for the exam. Barshashree had petitioned the district and sessions judge Golaghat through the Golaghat jail authorities to grant her permission to appear for her semester exams.
