Southern Assam was reportedly struck by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday at around 11:03 am.

The depth was 35 kilometres. There have been no reports of deaths or property damage as of yet, an official report said.

The northeastern region falls in the high seismic zone where earthquakes are frequent.

National Center for Seismology (NCS) is the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring earthquake activity in the country.

Earlier in the day, an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred 215 km east southeast of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The depth of the earthquake was 44 km which occurred at 5:57 am.

A 6.4 magnitude quake shook Assam and parts of North East on April 28 in 2021, making it one of the high magnitude quakes in recent years.

Another 6.1 magnitude jolt was also felt in parts of Assam and Mizoram on November 26 that year.
