In partial modification, the Naka/ Check Point at Moirang Lamkhal on the Bishnupur to Kangvai Road shall be manned by Civil Police and CRPF in the place of 9 Assam Rifles with immediate effect and until further orders, a statement issued read.

Meira Paibi, a collective of Meitei women, on Monday staged protests against Assam Rifles in the Imphal Valley.

They staged sit-in demonstrations in various localities blocking roads, demanding the removal of Assam Rifles from violence-hit areas and accusing the paramilitary force of “brutality during recent agitations”.


Protestors raised the slogan “Assam Rifles go back”. They said, “Evidence has come to light that Assam Rifles is biased and is targeting the Meiteis instead of discharging their duties responsibly and sincerely.”

Hundreds of women carrying placards and banners held demonstrations throughout the day, demanding withdrawal of the Assam Rifles from the five valley districts -- Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
The protesters blockaded various important highways and junctions.

Ethnic clashes between Kukis and Meiteis broke out in Manipur on May 3, and have been continuing for the last three months, claiming over 160 lives.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) valley based civil society organisation forwarded a series of resolutions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The organisation recently organised a massive rally and adopted resolutions which included total eradication of foreign (illegal immigrant) Chin-Kuki Narco-Terrorism that has been plaguing Manipur, preserving the state's unity and integrated governance to ensure the smooth functioning of the state's institutions and governance mechanisms, to tackle the complex issue of illegal immigration, COCOMI insists on the immediate and full implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and summoning of a special session of the Manipur Assembly.
