Assam Public Works moves SC to unlock data of 27 lakh people for Aadhaar

Biometric details are locked and lakhs have been deprived of Aadhaar cards and the linked welfare schemes. APW has sought court intervention and sought unlocking of biometric data so that people can be issued Aadhaar cards.

Guwahati: Assam Public Works (APW), the NGO which is one of the main petitioners in the National Register of Citizens case, has petitioned in Supreme Court for unlocking of the biometric data gathered during the course of hearing of claims and objections during the NRC process.

Biometric details are locked and lakhs have been deprived of Aadhaar cards and the linked welfare schemes. APW has sought court intervention and sought unlocking of biometric data so that people can be issued Aadhaar cards.

The Assam government had recently decided to provide Aadhaar cards to 27 lakh people whose biometric details are still locked. The government in the meeting with several organisations has decided to move the SC for review of the NRC.
