Assam Police targets higher conviction rate, stronger crime control

Guwahati: The two-day conference of senior Superintendents of Police (SPs) of Assam concluded at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon.

The conference, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, focused on strengthening law and order, improving crime control and investigation, raising conviction rates and enhancing the overall capabilities of Assam Police.

Sarma said several important decisions were taken to further strengthen law and order and reduce crime. He said special emphasis was placed on enhancing the capabilities of the police force and improving the law-and-order situation.


The Chief Minister said Assam Police has achieved significant progress in crime investigation and filing charge sheets before courts. At present, the force files charge sheets in more than 80% of registered cases within the stipulated 60- or 90-day period.

The conviction rate has also risen from around 7% in 2021 to approximately 29% at present, Sarma said. The government is working to raise it further to 35%.

Several decisions were also taken to strengthen Assam Police’s capabilities and infrastructure. These include enhancing forensic science capabilities, strengthening the prosecution system, reinforcing the state’s disaster mitigation mechanism and forming two new police battalions.

The new battalions will strengthen security at Oil India Limited and ONGC installations and support the state’s disaster response mechanism.

The conference also decided to expedite long-pending promotions in Assam Police. Sarma said the state government has recruited 21,000 personnel into Assam Police over the past five years.

The Chief Minister said the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy would also be upgraded with modern facilities, including a shooting range, equestrian facilities, sports infrastructure and residential facilities for police personnel.

Sarma said this was the first conference of Superintendents of Police held during the present State Government’s new term. Several responsibilities have been assigned to SPs, along with directions to ensure that the decisions taken at the conference are implemented within the next four to six months.

He said the next conference of Superintendents of Police during the current term will be held in Bongaigaon in February next year.
